In a new article which published in the Irish Independent today, 25th January 2021, Irish Medical experts are urging people to take Vitamin D supplements to help protect against Covid-19.
The group of experts who hail from a number of leading Irish universities, have appealed urgently to the Irish Government here to issue updated guidelines for all adults on the supplementation of Vitamin D, which they say can significantly reduce the risk of infection, serious illness and death from Covid-19.
According to the article, Director of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at TU and Trinity College, Dr. Dan McCartney, has said “Along with mask-wearing, hand-washing, social-distancing and cough etiquette, taking vitamin D supplements now will give the Irish population a degree of protection while the vaccine is being rolled out.”
The group have cited studies in Andalucia in Spain, research from Germany and France and figures from Finland in their recommendations. A larger study in the UK which was published in December is also noted for its impressive results.
In the piece, Dr. McCartney went on to say “Supplementation is the answer here. It is not possible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from food or sunshine at this time of year to achieve the blood levels necessary for enhanced immunity.”
The article concludes that “There is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in this country across all age groups meaning that all adults are at great risk.”
