A Resolution You Can Keep – Sleep More!

Mar 28, 2023

We all think we can survive on very little sleep, but is mere survival enough?

While some of us are accustomed to a mere 5-6 hours of sleep and can cope fine with that, we also know that we feel more alert, energetic, happier, and better able to function following a good night of 8-10 hrs sleep.

It’s a scientific fact that our bodies need sleep. While we often think of it as a time for relaxation and a chance for our bodies and minds to shut down, sleep is an incredibly active period for our bodies during which a lot of important processing, restoration, and strengthening occurs.

Our bodies all require long periods of sleep in order to restore and rejuvenate, to grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones. During sleep, every system in the body gets a chance to recuperate and get important work done without the distraction of movement or stimulus.

Healthy Habits

Consistency is key when it comes to sleep. A healthy sleep routines allows us, regardless of our age, to meet our sleep needs every night, and keep on top of life’s challenges every day. It also keeps the body’s natural rhythm in balance.

It can take up to 3 weeks to break a habit and create a new one, so if you want to improve your sleep look first at setting yourself a sleep time and a wake up time. Even if it takes a while to get to sleep at first, telling your body that it’s time for bed is an important step towards healthy sleep habits.

Stress & Sleep

Talking regularly to health store staff they tell us that lots of their customers complain of sleep problems. Struggling to get to sleep seems the most common as people struggle to unwind after busy, stressful days.

Many of today’s sleep problems come from stress. When your mind is struggling to cope with information/activity overload it can also struggle to slow down and allow you to settle at night time. Dealing with your daily stresses through exercise, meditation, diet, mindfulness or nutritional supplements could make a big difference to your sleep quality and length of time spent asleep.

Supplements

There are many supplements and remedies available in your local health store to aid a more restful sleep. If you do need some help with the quality and length of your sleep, ask the staff in your local store about the relaxation benefits of Magnesium, Chamomile, and Lemon Balm which have all been traditionally used to aid sleep.

If you think stress may be a contributing factor in your sleep issues, dealing with the stress during daylight hours could greatly benefit your night time routine.
